Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

Lion Mike Halbach introduced guest speaker Oel Castner from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo(HLSR) Speakers Committee. Oel Catner showed members a copy of that morning’s Houston Chronicle which had a feature article on Oel’s involvement with (HLSR) for 40+ years. Oel gave a very enjoyable presentation on his years volunteering at the HLSR including many years working with youth livestock exhibitors. That work started while he was Director at the Baptist Children’s Home in San Antonio in the 60’s and 70’s and continued after he and his wife Kathy moved to the Houston area in 1980. He emphasized the many benefits the HLSR has provided to youth over the years including learning discipline associated with raising animals for show competition and, of course, the tremendous amount of scholarships awarded to the youth.
